Understanding Patient Preference on Colorectal Cancer Screening Options
Objective
The overall goal of our study is two-fold: Examine patient preference when a blood-based CRC screening option is available and compliance with CRC screening, especially among diverse and vulnerable populations; and understand how to increase the adoption, implementation, and sustainability of an evidence-based screening method to improve CRC screening uptake and adherence.
Objective 1: Assess patient preferences for CRC screening when presented with a blood-based test screening option, and evaluate their screening compliance, including post-blood-drawn satisfaction surveys to examine patient preferences for CRC screening. Objective 1-1: Collect baseline data from the HRSA National Health Center Program Uniform Data System (UDS) before implementing the lab-developed Guardant SHIELD blood-based screening test, including non-compliant rates in stool-based tests and colonoscopy and basic demographic information of patients who failed or refused to complete the screening test. Objective 1-2: Implement the blood-based screening test, available to patients who fail or refuse to complete the screening using traditional methods at our partner sites. Objective 1-3: Collect quarterly data from electronic health records (EHR) to track changes over time. Objective 1-4: Assess the moderator and mediator effects on the acceptance of a blood-based test as a screening option to improve screening compliance.
Objective 2: Evaluate the effectiveness of our implementation strategies to accelerate the adoption and implementation. Objective 2-1: Implement the proposed implementation strategies (provider education, academic detailing, to accelerate the adoption and implementation process. Objective 2-2: Monitor the adoption rates and intensity of use quarterly and time to achieve 2.5%, 16%, and 50% adoption rates. Objective 2-3: Identify potential interaction or mediation effects on the effectiveness of the implementation strategies. Objective 2-4: Develop a toolkit based on our findings for future implementation in other similar settings.
