Vaccine Talks: Evaluating the feasibility of a podcast intervention to improve provider communication about HPV vaccination
Objective
The overall goal of this study is to develop and test the feasibility of a podcast-delivered intervention to improve primary care providers (PCPs) communication about HPV vaccination by addressing common challenges they experience to participate in existing trainings. Our intervention, called Vaccine Talks, will consist of six 30-minute podcast episodes, plus audio practice and feedback exercises after each episode. Podcast episodes will follow the curriculum of the Announcement Approach Training, an NCI-designated Evidence-based Cancer Control Program (EBCCP), while incorporating conversations and role-plays about HPV vaccination in primary care that are well suited for this audio format. In addition, the audio practice and feedback exercises will allow us to deliver feedback specific to the roles of different types of PCPs (i.e., pediatrician, family medicine physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant), supporting a vaccination culture and team-based efforts within practices. Using clinics electronic health records, podcast analytics, participants survey data, and practice audio recordings, we will evaluate the feasibility and initial efficacy of our podcast intervention.
Our study will test the following hypotheses: Hypothesis 1: PCPs will demonstrate greater usability of communication best practices to recommend HPV vaccination when comparing their baseline to their 3-month follow up. Hypothesis 2: PCPs will rate the intervention highly in terms of acceptability and the majority of participants will complete the podcast episodes and audio practice exercises per protocol.
